Apple release iOS 6.1 on 28 January 2013 which allows Vodacom users to make use of their LTE network.

In order to get LTE working on your device you will need the following:

  1. iPhone 5 (iPad 4th Generation and iPad Mini do NOT have support)
  2. Contact with Vodacom (Prepaid customers will not have access)
  3. SIM card that can use LTE (This should have come standard with your iPhone 5, If you cut your card it will not support LTE)
  4. Change the APN to “lte.vodacom.za”

To change the APN follow these steps:

Go to Settings

Select General

Select Cellular

Select Cellular Data Network

Change the Cellular Data APN to: ‘lte.vodacom.za’

Why are prepaid customers excluded? And will Vodacom ever support them?

We are not sure why MTN has been excluded or when it will become available.

Prepaid customers are excluded at this time because they want to give the best service to contract customers. It will eventually become available to prepaid customers.

Just to add to this. I did all of the above. Did the 6.1 update, APN settings, the works. Still it did not work. In the end I had to phone Vodacom data department and viola. They activated my LTE and after a couple of hours it worked. I know that another friend of mine came right without activation, but hopefully it will be of help to others. Peace.
